Battling Type 1 Diabetes every single day is nothing short of a superhero’s mission!
While they might not wear a cape (although some do, as shown above…lol), those living with type 1 diabetes are doing what any true hero would do. People with insulin-dependent diabetes pour incredible amounts of energy into managing the daily tasks necessary to combat the relentless challenges of this disease. One of the most crucial tasks? Injecting insulin multiple times a day to stay healthy and alive.
After all, isn’t that what heroes do? Save lives. They fight injustice, and living with a chronic, life-threatening illness is anything but fair or just. Sure, these things happen, but can anyone really explain to a five-year-old who’s just been diagnosed with diabetes that it’s fair? Now, she has to learn how to calculate the carbohydrate content of every food she eats in order to adjust her insulin doses accordingly.
Whether she’s five, fifteen, or forty-five, she and her family are now constantly making life-saving decisions. They think about carb calculations, exercise, medication, stress levels, where to inject next, how to store supplies, and how to always have them on hand. They also wonder what to say when checking blood sugar in front of others. Truly, superheroes in every sense!
So, the next time you meet someone with type 1 or “insulin-dependent” diabetes, take a moment to acknowledge the incredible effort they put into fighting this disease. Let them know how inspiring it is that they’re battling this evil force to save their lives and stand up against injustice.
To everyone with type 1 diabetes—or “liveabetes” as one child called it—keep fighting! You are amazing!
