What is it about smooth stones, weathered over centuries by the relentless tumbling of waves and currents, that we find so captivating? As stormy, turbulent waters repeatedly crash rocks into one another, their sharp edges chip away, transforming jagged stones into smooth, even soft-to-the-touch surfaces. Their once-muted colors are now brilliantly displayed. Many of us collect these beautiful stones—some for later projects or purposes, others simply for their aesthetic appeal.
Have you ever wondered why life is filled with so much stress and struggle? What are we meant to learn from difficult times or the frustrating moments with family, friends, and colleagues? Why do people hurt one another, or, perhaps more perplexing, hurt themselves? Some questions seem to defy clear, straightforward answers.
These are spiritual inquiries we may ponder as we seek meaning and insight into our existence on Earth. Other such questions, eluding scientific explanation, include: “Why am I alive?”, “Who am I?”, and “What happens when I die?”
Perhaps the storms and struggles of life are shaping us, just as waves shape smooth stones. As we’re battered by the people, events, and challenges that cross our path, maybe we, too, are being molded, smoothed, and formed into something beautiful. Who knows? One day, we may also be collected for some great project or purpose.
Finding ways to view the struggles and knocks of life with a positive mindset is an art form. Cognitive shifting or restructuring is a skill that can be learned, taught, and honed. Be patient. Like any skill, it takes time to develop—especially when nurtured through constant learning, reading, collaboration, and mentoring.
